    Job Description: The Fairmount Township Fire Department proudly serves the rapidly growing communities of the City of Basehor and Fairmount Township. Located within Leavenworth County, Kansas, our service area spans 39.2 square miles. We provide essential services, including fire suppression, EMS, rescue, prevention, inspection, and public education, to approximately 12,224 citizens.

    We are seeking highly motivated and experienced individuals to assume the role of Fire Captain. This leadership position is critical to the department, as it will manage the daily operations of two fire stations within Fairmount Township.

    Responsibilities include:
    Direct response to fire and medical emergencies.
    Conducting mandatory business inspections.
    Developing and leading department training.
    Performing necessary administrative functions.
    Fulfilling other assignments as directed by the Fire Chief.

    Mandatory Qualifications
    To ensure eligibility for the Shift Fire Captain position, prospective candidates must fulfill the following mandatory criteria. The submission of all official licenses and certifications is required as part of the application packet.

    Basic Eligibility: Applicants must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age, possess a valid Class B Non-Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators License, and hold a High School Diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) equivalent.

    Professional Experience: Candidates must document a minimum of five (5) years of verifiable experience as a firefighter or fire officer within the Fairmount Township Fire Department or a fire department of comparable size or larger, which may include both volunteer and paid service periods.

    Required Certifications (IFSAC or Equivalent) - The following professional certifications are essential for consideration:
    Firefighter I and II.
    Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations.
    Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification (State of Kansas or National Registry).
    NIMS Compliance: ICS 100, 200, 700, and ICS 300.
    Fire Officer I.
    Instructor 1.
    Equivalency and Board Discretion: An Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, when substantiated by five years of experience, may be deemed equivalent to certain IFSAC certification requirements. The governing Board reserves the right to waive or modify any qualification at its discretion.

    Preferred Candidate Profile Candidates possessing the following supplementary credentials will be highly regarded in the selection process:

    Formal Selection Process
    The applicant selection procedure adheres to the following rigorous sequence:

    Initial Submission: The applicant must submit all requisite paperwork, the resume, and certification documentation to the Fire Chief.

    Administrative Review: The Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief will review all submitted materials to verify that the applicant satisfies all mandatory requirements.

    Evaluations: Qualified applicants will proceed to a formal written test based on IFSTA Officer 1, followed by structured, hands-on scenario evaluations.

    Final Interview: Successful candidates from the evaluations phase will be scheduled for a final, formal interview.

    Wages and Benefits
    This is a non-exempt position with a starting rate of approximately $81,968.64 per year. This position is within a step based compensation plan. The current top step is approximately $109,845.82 per year. This position will work a 24-hour Berkeley shift schedule: 24 hours on (8 a.m. to 8 a.m.), 24 hours off, 24 hours on (8 a.m. to 8 a.m.), 24 hours off, 24 hours on (8 a.m. to 8 a.m.), four days off. Then the schedule repeats.

    This position is covered by the Kansas Police and Fire retirement plan.

    Health, Dental, and Vision insurance are available. Individual health insurance is covered 100%. Family health plans are covered at 80%, with a 20% cost to the employee. Dental and Vision insurance are at the cost of the employee.

    A 457 individual retirement plan is available. This position also includes paid vacation and sick leave.

    Hesston Fire/EMS is accepting applications for the position of full-time Paramedic/Firefighter. Full-time employees do not have a residency requirement; however, preference will be given to those living in or near Hesston.


    Qualified applicants must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license and Kansas Paramedic certification at time of hire. National Firefighter I and II certification is preferred.

    However, training for fire certifications can be provided with certification completion within one year of hire. Candidates must pass a background check, a department physical assessment and a drug screen.


    Hesston Fire/EMS offers competitive hourly wages with built-in overtime, starting at $50,000/annually D.O.E.     This position will work weekdays, 24 hours on and 24 hours off following a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule on week one and Tuesday, Thursday on week two.

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the Firefighter is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee is responsible for protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Girard by performing fire suppression, technical rescues, hazardous materials responses, and emergency medical care. This employee should be in good physical condition and can remain poised under difficult and hazardous circumstances.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Protects the lives and property of the citizens of Girard by performing fire suppression, responding to emergency medical and rescue calls.
    • Operates, maintains and tests department equipment, including trucks, pumps, hoses, hydrants and other apparatus.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS
    Experience: Some firefighting experience is required. Employees are expected to have acquired experience from previous agencies.
    Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. This employee must possess a valid Class B Kansas Driver's License, and a Kansas EMT-B license, CPR, IFSAC or PRO Board Firefighter 1 certification.

    Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques is required. This employee must be able to operate hydraulic and air operated rescue equipment, fire trucks, generators, and other department equipment. The employee must be proficient with rope rescue techniques and possess a working knowledge of city geography and fire-flow hydraulics. The ability to perform equipment maintenance, and to read and interpret written instructions, reports, manuals and instructional materials is required. This position requires proper wear of SCBA and other PPE.     Problem Solving: Problem solving and anticipating problems is a factor in this position. This employee encounters problems with fire suppression, rescue, medical emergencies and equipment malfunctions. Serious problems are reported to the Fire Chief.
    Decision Making: Decision making is a factor in this position. This employee makes decisions about maintaining department equipment, proper safety procedures and performs daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner. This employee must be able to function effectively and make decisions in life/death situations.
    Supervision: This position is subject to frequent supervision from the Fire Chief but does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel unless the employee is acting as Fire Chief or incident commander at an emergency. This position may be required to lead volunteers.
    Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment but does not participate in the annual budget process.

    Personal Relations: This employee has daily contact with the public, and at times deals with the public in extremely tense and stressful situations. The Firefighter interacts with co-workers and supervisors.
    Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to extreme heat, cold, and weather conditions are expected.   • Job Description: Within an assigned district of the state, the Inspector conducts Fire and Life Safety inspections of facilities under the jurisdiction of the Kansas Fire Prevention Code. Inspection work is governed by Division Directives which address inspection preparation, types of inspections, inspection protocol, interpretive guidelines, local agency liaison and limits of authority. The territory that this position covers is Wyandotte County. Residency within the territory is preferred; however, this will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.


    Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

    Independently plan and schedule travel itineraries to utilize time and mileage in the most efficient manner.  Work is assigned by the Topeka office and by inspection initiative.

    May periodically be assigned to an inspection team conducting inspections at large facilities. Most inspections are routine in nature; however, special inspections are periodically conducted to support ongoing Enforcement activities or investigate complaints.

    Utilize independent judgment in evaluating the facility; however, the judgment is guided by Division Directives.

    Completes documentation substantiating inspection findings. The Kansas Inspection Data System (KIDS)generates most of the necessary inspection paperwork. The Inspector updates KIDS information.

    At the close of the inspection, the Inspector provides violation specific citations from a variety of statutory, regulatory or technical code standard sources in accordance with Division Directives. These citations and conclusions provide the bases for Enforcement follow-up.

    The Inspector completes paperwork necessary for time accounting, vehicle use and expense reimbursement in accordance with Division, Agency and State policies and directives.

    Participates in periodic staff training events and staff conference calls. These training events provide the Inspector with increased knowledge of Division Directives, interpretations, operating practices, statutes, rules and regulations or adopted national standards.

    Independently studies Division Directives, statutes, rules and regulations and adopted codes and standards to enhance knowledge and job performance.

    Significant travel and some overnight stays are required.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    Experience: Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment. At the end of the first 18 months, it is expected that the firefighter will have the Hazardous Materials Technician certification and be fire Driver Operator certified.

    Education: A high school diploma or GED is required, and a technical degree or some college credit in Fire Science including an Associate of Applied Science Degree is preferred. The following certifications are strongly preferred or must be obtained within one year of appointment: Emergency Medical Technician (Kansas Board of EMS), Fire Fighter I and II (IFSAC or Pro Board), Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations (IFSAC or Pro Board) (IFSAC or Pro Board). A valid non-commercial Class B Kansas Driver’s License is required as well as maintaining a good driving record.
